Slingshot is a tiny, radical publishing house for kids and their grown-ups.
We trust children with the disorderly and the revolutionary.
We imagine things afresh — politically, culturally and through the means by which we make and sell books.
We reject the orthodoxies of conventional publishing, placing resistance and liberation at the centre of our decision making.
Welcome to our house!
Hi, my name’s Tess.
I’m the publisher at Slingshot Books – a place to question, dismantle and build things anew.
I seek to broaden the range of print material accessible to children and their grown-ups. It’s my hope that the growing Slingshot library helps raise curious, brave, loving and critically engaged people who are committed to collective liberation.
Tess speaks with Priya Kunjan on 3CR Radical Radio’s Thursday Breakfast.
Tess and Priya discuss the launch of Slingshot Books, the possibility of anti-imperialist kids' publishing, our duty of care to children, and what a metric for success might look like for a business built on anti-capitalist principles.
Datsun Tran speaks with Liminal Magazine about his upcoming Slingshot title Then and Now
“The way refugees are often depicted in news and media doesn’t usually show the humanity, other than the suffering. So I wanted to show refugees as people like you and I, people who have had to go through a really devastating event.”
Financial transparency and paying the rent.
Slingshot is an Irish settler-run business based on Wurundjeri land in Australia. We advocate for land back. In the past, we have made contributions to Pay the Rent and the Whistleblowers, Activists & Communities Alliance (WACA), who cover legal fees incurred through principled direct action. We now pay monthly Black Peoples Union dues and make regular contributions to mutual aid. Should Slingshot become profitable, financial contributions will increase.
Slingshot received a Creative Victoria grant in 2022 that funded the creative development and founding of this venture and partially funded the production of our debut title. No seed funding has been sought or received, and no further grants have been received.
